the blue (of the jay)

How can it be

that the blue
of the jay
be so truly blue?

that the angle
of his head
be so sharp?

that the detail
of his feathers
be so defined:
black, then gray,
then blue, then white?

that the

gangly-angular

legs perched
beneath him
be so sturdy,
so all-responsible?

You say,
Because.
You say,
It just is.

Because.

But How?

Genes,
and order,
and natural
selection.

Yes, but how?

blue;
angle;
defined;
responsible;

How

can it be?

. . . . . .
