Hawk

                       hawk circling

overhead pines,
outstretched wings eclipse
sun
then clouds
then sky;
graceful diurnal merry-go-round,
elegant dance,
solitary.

                       the hunt,

carnivorous,
fatal.

                      nimble annular flight
revealing slavery
to survival.

                       joy-glide

before The Kill.

below,

small skittering
mouse,
slithering reptile,
half-conscious(es),
dilly-dallying(s),
hunting, too,
unawares:

above’s
                       impending doom,

sudden end
to thought,
sensation,
beating heart;

                       rapid digestion:

swoop, then bite
which takes you,

through pale pink
viscous pipeline,
and down, and inward;
somber transition
from living, breathing doodad
to intestinal pulp.

. . . . . .
