The Cup

I taught the devil a lesson one day,

And she turned into a liar.

She told me the truth but also said

She was excellent at faking.

Excellent at faking? I said,

Well what do you mean?

And so she said, “Give me some water,

I’ll turn it to wine, or the reverse;”

And handed it to me for the taking.

I drank from the cup

To know for myself

The truth from a lie;

Sand in its place

I spit out what’d come to my lips:

The water’d completely gone dry!

The truth, the lies, the devilish grin

on her face after just one sip.

How could you?! I said,

You told me you’d show me the truth!

She said, the truth is the lie

Why didn’t you know, when

I’ve already furnished you proof?

The lesson my friends is this, you see,

Don’t doubt what you already know.

A person is not quite human, indeed,

When it’s only their weakness they’ll show.
